Vedic Astrology (Vedic Jyotish) v/s Red Book (Lal Kitab)
There are two primary systems of astrology practiced in India: Vedic Astrology (Vedic Jyotish) and Red Book (Lal Kitab). While both aim to guide and predict, the methods, principles, and approaches are completely different.
Understanding Red Book Astrology
Lal Kitab does not follow traditional zodiac signs. Instead, it considers the house placement of planets as zodiac indicators. For example:
If the Sun is placed in your first house, Red Book treats your zodiac sign as Aries.
If the Sun is in your tenth house,your zodiac sign is considered to be Capricorn—regardless of the actual sign in that house.
Red Book predictions are primarily based on Varshphal—a yearly forecast calculated from birthdate to birthdate. So, if you were born on February 14, 1993, your yearly forecast would cover from February 14, 2025, to February 14, 2026.
The Red Book does not consider Mahadasha, Antardasha, nakshatras, or divisional charts.
Understanding Vedic Astrology
Vedic astrology is a far more complex and detailed system. It includes:
27 Nakshatras
12 houses
12 zodiac signs
9 planets
Divisional charts like D1, D9, and more
Systems like Mahadasha, Antardasha, planetary transits, degrees, Ashtakavarga, and Shashtakavarga play a very big role while calculating and analysing predictions of a particular birth chart.
Vedic astrology takes a deep analytical approach, offering accurate, customized predictions by looking at the entire chart. It is a holistic method that tracks how various planetary influences unfold across time.
What Works for Whom?
In my 25 years of astrology practice, I’ve found that:
95% of people get highly accurate results from Vedic astrology.
But for about 5%, Vedic astrology doesn’t align as well—and in these rare cases, Red Book’s yearly predictions provide better accuracy.
It’s never happened that both systems matched perfectly for the same chart. So it’s important for every astrologer and student to recognize which method resonates better with a particular individual’s chart.

Whether you follow Vedic astrology or Red Book, make sure you understand the system you're using.
